Young people frequently change their jobs for the best salaries and facilities this makes them neglect towards the amount that is present in one’s EPF account. Many employees usually forget to transfer or withdraw amount that is available in EPF account as they are in a hurry to change their jobs as soon as possible. The account which is not getting money contribution for three years is considered to be inoperative account. So, EPFO had opened online facility to find the inoperative account and claim for the amount remained present in the account.

Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has introduced an online help desk to help members trace out their inoperative account. It will also assist the members in claiming the money lying in the accounts. The Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has around Rs. 27,000 crores lying in inoperative accounts. There are chances that a small portion of this unclaimed money is yours. Many employees feel that the EPF account transfer is a cumbersome process and is a painful experience. It is often observed that we just ignore to transfer the funds to the existing EPF account.

Any amount becoming due to a member as a result of
(i) supplementary contribution from the employer in respect of leave wages/arrears of pay, installment of arrears contribution received in respect of a member whose claim has been settled on account but which could not be remitted for want of latest address, or
(ii) accumulation in respect of any member who has either ceased to be employed or died [but no application for withdrawal under paragraphs 69 or 70 or transfer, as the case may be has been preferred] within a period of [thirty six months] from the date it becomes payable, or if any amount remitted to a person, is received back undelivered, and is not claimed again within a period of [thirty six months] from the date it becomes payable, shall be transferred to an account to be called the “Inoperative EPF Account”.

In simple terms- Any EPF account which is not getting any money contribution for consecutive 36 months (3 years) is called an inoperative EPF account. Inoperative EPF account is similar to an inoperative bank account.

How to find inoperative EPF account online?

EPFO do not pay interest on the EPF account, where no contributions (no activity) have been received for 36 or more months continuously. EPFO considers this type of account as an ‘Inoperative EPF Account.’ It is a daunting task to trace an inoperative EPF account and also, we hardly get any help or support from EPFO. Now, things are changing for the better at EPFO. It’s a good time to remember your long forgotten EPF account. And to make your job of staking a claim easier, an EPFO inoperative account online helpdesk has been launched recently. The helpdesk works on the basis of how much and how accurate is the information that you can provide about your old / dormant EPF account(s). So, the more you provide, the better it is.

1. This facility is available at EPFO website http://www.epfindia.com/site_en/ Inoperative A/C Help desk (under services).

2. On clicking this link, CPFC message will appear in the next screen. At the bottom of this screen, click on the “first time user Click here to proceed” button to register your case

3.On the next screen, you need to provide the problem description and click ‘next’ button to proceed.

4.Next, you need to provide the known details of the inoperative EPF account and click on ‘next’ button.

5.Next screen, you need to provide your basic details. Mandatory fields are Name, Date of Birth and Mobile.

6.You can also enter your KYC details (Aadhaar number, PAN number, Bank Account number and IFSC code). After entering the details click on “Generate PIN” button to receive the PIN on your mobile.

7.Now on entering the PIN in the space provided, a reference number will be generated on the screen. Kindly, note down this reference number. You can use this reference number for tracking your request.

If you have provided your old establishment code then your request about your inoperative EPF account will be forwarded to the concerned EPFO’s field officer (Regional EPFO). They will help you to find your inoperative EPF account. If you have not provided your establishment code then your request will be forwarded to the centralized EPFO helpdesk. They will call you to collect more information about your EPF account and then your request will be forwarded to the concerned EPFO’s field officer.

How to track status of inoperative EPF account request?
The helpdesk works on the basis of how much and how accurate is the information that you can provide about your old / dormant EPF account(s). So, the more you provide, the better it is

1. Visit effendi portal and click on ‘Inoperative A/c Helpdesk’ link.

2. Click on ‘Existing User‘.

3. It takes you to a new window as below and click on ‘Login’ as ‘Registered Member’ Enter the reference number and mobile number to check the status of your request.

5. If you have forgotten the reference number, click on ‘Forgot reference no’. In the next screen, you have to enter the mobile number and Date of Birth to receive your reference number.


Once your account is traced by the EPFO’s field officer, you will be notified through an SMS. You need to either withdraw the monies (by submitting Form 9) or transfer your old EPF account to your current EPF account. But, if you don’t know the Establishment Code or PF number, then queries will be transferred to centralized helpdesk.

They will call you to get further information and providing inputs to field officers, there is no time limit set for tracking PF account, but more information from the employee side makes it faster to locate. Please, preserve all your UAN and other registration numbers for future use.
